Furkids Animal Rescue and Shelters, an organization of no-kill animal rescue centers in Atlanta, Georgia, uploaded a side-splitting commercial to get people to adopt their cats.
The video was uploaded to YouTube Dec. 23, and earned a few dozen views in the following days. But it went viral it to the message board Jan. 4. It quickly rose to the front page of both Reddit and YouTube, and has since amassed more than 1 million views.
‘You like sleepy kitties? We’ve got the sleepiest kitties you’ve ever seen!’
Improvised and shot in under three hours, the nearly three-minute spot stars Atlanta native Paul Preston, who takes on the exaggerated salesmanship and swagger of a used car salesman while extolling the virtues of the group’s adoptable cats.
For example: “You like sleepy kitties? We’ve got the sleepiest kitties you’ve ever seen!” Preston enthuses at one point, gesturing at a napping cat.
There’s even a woman imitating an inflatable dancing noodle in the beginning. Preston’s sister, who volunteers at Furkids, came up with the idea for the ad’s gimmick, but the viral success came as a surprise.
Preston, who works a contractor with a rental property company, throws out a wealth of “so bad it’s good” bits in the video, such as “All of our cats are self-cleaning” and “Our 2016 models are compatible with windows.” The latter is spoken over footage of kittens pawing at a glass window while Preston playfully taps on the other side.
A chubby brown cat even gives Preston a high-five at the 1:45 mark.
Reddit users compared its budget production to documentary-style sitcoms like “The Office” or “Parks and Recreation.” Some said Paul reminded them of Jason Segal, and one user postulated his familiar countenance as “the love child of Jason Bateman and Rob Riggle?”
“He dadjoke’d his way into my heart, ” wrote user Soundsparks.
User Abbacore wrote, “This video got me feline really good inside, ” and SmartOtter14 commented that “This commercial literally deserves every single award.”
The commercial tops off with a hilarious acoustic ode to everyone’s least favorite SPCA commercial, where Sarah McLachlan sings “In the Arms of an Angel” and you cry for five days.
