Cat adoption Long Beach

Cat Adoption / October 30, 2021

Long Beach Animal Care Services has a unique agreement with the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (spcaLA). Through our partnership the spcaLA has the first right to select adoptable animals from our shelter. If you are interested in adopting one of our guests, please go to the Adoptions counter on the day the animal is legally available. We recommend arriving at 10am as some animals are particularly popular.

Animals not initially selected by the spcaLA for adoption can still be adopted through our shelter. Please come visit our shelter, any animal with a green kennel card is legally available to adopt. If you wish to adopt a pet, you will be required to fill out an application and be approved for adoption. The animals on the links below are legally available for adoption through our shelter. Animals who pose a threat to the public will not be made available for adoption. In addition, some of the animals listed may not be made available for adoption or rescue due to health or behavioral problems.

Who We Are

Welcome to the P.D. Pitchford Animal Companion Village, home of Long Beach Animal Care Services and SPCA-LA. The vision of Animal Care Services is to become California's safest large city for people and animals through a proactive strategy of community engagement and enforcement activities. The City of Long Beach provides animal care services to four contract cities, including Cerritos, Seal Beach, Signal Hill and Los Alamitos.

In 2001, the Animal Care Services relocated to its new state-of-the-art companion animal care and control village. Thanks to a unique partnership agreement between the City of Long Beach and the spcaLA (Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, Los Angeles), the two agencies now jointly deliver innovative and revolutionary care to the animals that enter the Village. Residents of Long Beach and contract cities also benefit from more efficient animal care services.

The P.D. Pitchford Companion Animal Village is a friendly and functionally efficient facility that serves as a national model for future animal shelters. The Village is housed on over 6 acres and provides a healthier and safer environment for the animals. Some of the exciting and innovative features of the Village include an interactive display of adoptable animals, cat colonies with screened porches allowing indoor/outdoor access, state-of-the-art indoor/outdoor dog kennels and a multipurpose education center.

Community residents and guests are invited to visit the P.D. Pitchford Companion Animal Village to learn about the humane treatment and care of all animals and, perhaps, spend time with some of the wonderful animals housed at the Village.
