Adopting from the Greater Birmingham Humane Society is a simple process if you know what to expect. Our adoption process is designed to make sure you, your family, AND the pet make a great match! Here is some advice to make the process easier on you AND your new forever friend! Research: What is your ideal animal? Will it get along with your animals? Will it get along with your children? What is adopting a puppy like? What are the benefits of an older animal? What challenges should I expect? Time: Expect to spend time with the animals. This process could take anywhere from thirty minutes to an hour. Landlords: Make sure the animal is allowed in your residence. Go ahead and tie up loose ends on your end before taking a companion home. Be responsible: Animals require regular food, vaccinations, and possibly emergency medical treatments. We look for forever families, so you must be able to provide for a new pet now and for the rest of its life. Prepare: Your animal needs more than a new owner. Some of the things you will need can be found in our gift shop at lower than retail prices. Every dollar you spend in our gift shop will directly benefit the homeless pets in our care. Meet and Greet: If you are looking to adopt another dog, bring yours with you! We want to make sure your current animals are compatible with the dog or puppy you want to adopt. Meeting on neutral territory will make the selection and introduction process that much easier. Vet Records: Bring current vet records for any pets in your home, or be prepared to present your veterinarian’s contact information. We want to ensure that your animals are up-to-date on their vaccinations. Your Family: Bring the whole gang! Some small children can be allergic to cats and dogs, but their parents are unaware of this condition. Some of our dogs are hard for the elderly or young children to handle due to their size and activity level. Bringing everyone in your household is critical for the success of the adoption and a long and wonderful life for the pet. Be prepared to pay our adoption fees.* Cats, kittens, dogs or puppies:

To begin, select the species that you are interested in by clicking on the buttons below. A new window will pop up that will show you a list of the animals currently available for adoption! You are welcome to show off a particular animal to your family and friends through Facebook, Twitter or email by clicking the “Share with a friend” button on the top of an animal’s profile page. Most importantly, have fun and fall in love with our adorable adoptables! Regular Adoption vs. Managed Adoption and how to tell the difference. Most of our animals are available through our regular adoption process of first come first serve – no appointment necessary! Sometimes we have animals that come in to CHS who have detailed medical or behaviour needs and require a very specific home. These animals are a ‘managed adoption’ which means, by appointment through our Adoption team. Often a behaviour or medical consultation will happen at the time of your visit to help set you and the animal up for success. To find out if the animal you are interested in is considered a managed adoption, check out their biography! Coming Soon Animals Notice an animal you are interested in adopting but their profile says they are ‘coming soon’ – not sure what it means? Basically it means the animal isn’t quite ready yet to be adopted. This can be for various reasons but most commonly, they are still on a legal hold in case an owner is looking for them. An animal that is listed as coming soon is still available to have visits and can be placed on hold for adoption with the stipulation that the adoption can’t be completed until the legal hold period is complete. Have more questions about coming soon animals? Give us a call at 403-205-4455 ext. 6503 Interested in a Patient Paw dog, cat or rabbit? Patient Paw animals have spent a longer-than-average time in the shelter and they are excited to find the perfect family! Dogs are available for a minimum donation of $50 and cats and rabbits are no minimum donation. Please note : Optional medical procedures and required behaviour classes are not included in Adoption by Donation price and must be paid for in full. Patient paw animals can be spotted in shelter by looking for the bright yellow paw print logo and are also listed as patient paw animals in their bios.

The Killara Rd shelter has been overwhelmed by the influx of kittens dropped off at the organisation and will discount adoption fees on cats and kittens from March 1 to 15. Animal Aid chief executive Mark Menze said the animal welfare organisation had too many cats and kittens on its hands and needed loving homes. “We have more felines on hand than we have room for, ” Mr Menze said. Flynn, four months old, is up for adoption at a discounted fee. Picture: Stuart Milligan Megan and Peach play around at the Killara Rd shelter. Picture: Stuart Milligan “So if you are considering bringing a cat or kitten into your home, please make adoption your first option.” He said from the start of the kitten season in October, about 1000 kittens and cats had been dropped off at Animal Aid’s shelters across Victoria. Mr Menze said adopters would receive a 50 per cent discount on older cats and 25 per cent off fees on kittens younger than six months. There is also a discount on adult cats such as seven-year-old Pumpkin.

DEVIN - Devin is an adorable orange tabby kitten overflowing with love to share! He is around 6months old and knows how to make a toy out of anything: pencils, post-it notes, potatoes. If you're looking for some laughs and someone to liven up the party, think about inviting Devin. He is an adventurous cat, but he'll always make time for cuddles! Devin has tested positive for Feline Leukemia. Please do your research before adopting. All adoptions include spay/neuter, vaccinations, microchip, and testing. Please with questions. Jack and Diane were abandoned as babies on the side of the road. One of our doctors rescued them. Jack and Diane are now approximately 16 weeks old. Both kittens are siblings. They are spayed/neutered and fully vaccinated. Sadly, when we had them at the hospital for routine veterinary care, they both tested positive for Corona virus. This means they must live in a home with no other cats. There is a slim chance they could develop FIP which is fatal. However, chances are very, very good they will live a normal life. The virus is not contagious to any other species but cats. These poor babies need someone with a big heart and a loving indoor home to allow them to have a family for Christmas and for always. There is no greater calling than saving the lives of two innocent creatures. Could you be that special person with a huge heart for animals? This is Jasper . He is currently 3 months old and was found on a busy freeway in the middle of the night. He loves to cuddle and take naps. He has a loud purr and talks back (the good kind). He loves dangling string toys and rolling toys. Jasper tested positive for FeLV. He injured his leg when we found him but the xrays confirmed no break or fracture. Everything looked normal and he is on his way to recovering from a strain. That doesn't break his spirits of being a happy kitten that explores his surroundings though. He needs a household preferably with no other cats. He is up to date on vaccines and needs a caring human to love. Chelsea Goetz

What is this mysterious stigma surrounding black cats? Even in modern times, as silly as it sounds, you still hear of black cats being associated with superstitions, black magic, and Pagan holidays such as Halloween. In honor of national Black Cat Appreciation Day on Sunday, August 17, let’s try to dispel this myth! When you picture a black cat, you probably think of the Bombay, the most common breed amongst the 21 breeds of black cats (and the breed most famous, too). They are known for their black coat, black toes, black nose and yellow eyes, and are also characterized as intelligent, playful, and attention-seeking. You might recognize a Bombay black cat (real or animated) from popular shows and movies including “The Simpsons, ” “Star Trek, ” “Hocus Pocus, ” “Sabrina the Teenage Witch, ” and “Coraline.” Let us also remember one of the world’s most notable black cats — Homer the Blind Wonder Cat of the book “Homer’s Odyssey.” Folklore varies from culture to culture, century to century. Interestingly enough, it was once believed that witches (or fairies) could change into cats. In fact, it is believed they could make that change nine times. Some believe this to be the origin of the belief that cats have nine lives. I’m sure you’ve heard of the superstition regarding a black cat crossing your path? That is derived from European folklore claiming that a black cat crossing one’s path, by moonlight, often signified death by epidemic. Silly? I think so! More than likely, a black cat crossing your path simply means the cat is going somewhere! Another superstition, quoted in various excerpts and one that I find particularly interesting here in Las Vegas, is that “the gambling world believes that if, while traveling to a casino, a black cat crosses your road or path, that person should not go to the casino; most players believe that black cats bring bad luck.” So how does all this affect current adoption rates and shelter occupancies for black cats? According to the ASPCA, “year-round, black cats are the least likely to get adopted in shelters across the U.S.” There’s no concrete answer as to why — while some may believe black cats are bad luck, it’s equally as likely that black cats stand out less compared to their brightly-colored kitten counterparts, or that they are harder to see inside their kennels. Black cats are just as pawsome as every other cat, though! Let’s go back a few centuries, to the Egyptian times of 3000 BC, when black cats were actually held in the highest esteem and to harm one was considered a capital crime. Sailors also believed in having a black cat onboard their ships to bring good luck, and some fisherman wives would keep black cats at home to influence the safe returns of their husbands. Many believe that black cats often seem more ‘empathic and intuitive’ than other cats. In my experience — since I have two black cats of my own — this couldn’t be more true! My boys (like Andrew, pictured here) are incredibly loving, extremely talkative, and often too smart for their own good!

Meet the Family Gizmo came to the Connecticut Humane Society in June 2013 suffering from demodectic mange that was so severe that he had lost much of his hair and his feet were horribly swollen. By the end of June he was stable enough to enter foster care with volunteer Laurie Boske. In August, Gizmo was declared healthy enough for adoption. But he never made it to the adoption floor because he had wormed his way into his foster mom’s heart. Laurie had fallen completely and hopelessly in love with the little guy and wanted to make him a permanent part of her family. On August 16, Gizmo went to his now permanent home after saying goodbye to all his friends at CHS. The Connecticut Humane Society finds new, loving homes for more than 5, 000 pets a year. Adopting one pet helps two – the one you take home and the one awaiting space. The adoption counselors are here each and every day to assist you in selecting a new member for your family. The goal of the Connecticut Humane Society is to promote responsible pet care and ownership. Give careful consideration to the commitments necessary to keeping your new pet happy and healthy. Adopters are asked to complete an adoption questionnaire, participate in an interview and sign a legal adoption agreement. If you are ready to adopt, please review the full adoption process online or visit one of our adoption centers and speak with the staff. Adopters receive many benefits when they take a pet home. Spay/neuter, vaccinations, microchipping and in some cases extensive care and rehabilitation are just a few of the services provided to the pets before they go home. **Interested in giving the gift of a pet? Many people simply are not aware of how many great adoptable kittens are available at Florida shelters. Some people might also have the misconception that kittens in shelters have something wrong with them. In fact, most Florida kittens for adoption end up in shelters not because of any problem with pet behavior or health issues, but because they were dropped off by someone who simply didn't have the time or money to care for the animals, or they were simply found in an alleyway. These kittens are healthy and very eager to please. Shelter kittens are wonderful- just ask anyone who has one! Adoption is a win-win for kittens and pet lovers. How can you find a kitten to love you for life? It’s simple: Adopt!

Amount of Shedding4More info + If you're going to share your home with a cat, you'll need to deal with some level of cat hair on your clothes and in your house. However, shedding does vary among the breeds. If you're a neatnik you'll need to either pick a low-shedding breed, or relax your standards. General Health4More info + Due to poor breeding practices, some breeds are prone to certain genetic health problems. This doesn't mean that every cat of that breed will develop those diseases; it just means that they're at an increased risk. If you're looking only for purebred cats or kittens, it's a good idea to find out which genetic illnesses are common to the breed you're interested in. Potential for Playfulness3More info + Some cats are perpetual kittens — full of energy and mischief — while others are more serious and sedate. Although a playful kitten sounds endearing, consider how many games of chase the mouse-toy you want to play each day, and whether you have kids or other animals who can stand in as playmates. Kid Friendly5More info + Being tolerant of children, sturdy enough to handle the heavy-handed pets and hugs they can dish out, and having a nonchalant attitude toward running, screaming youngsters are all traits that make a kid-friendly cat. Our ratings are generalizations, and they're not a guarantee of how any breed or individual cat will behave; cats from any breed can be good with children based on their past experiences and personality. Friendly Toward Strangers4More info + Stranger-friendly cats will greet guests with a curious glance or a playful approach; others are shy or indifferent, perhaps even hiding under furniture or skedaddling to another room. However, no matter what the breed, a cat who was exposed to lots of different types, ages, sizes, and shapes of people as a kitten will respond better to strangers as an adult. Easy to Groom4More info + Some breeds require very little in the way of grooming; others require regular brushing to stay clean and healthy. Consider whether you have the time and patience for a cat that needs daily brushing. Intelligence4More info + Some cat breeds are reputed smarter than others. But all cats, if deprived the mental stimulation they need, will make their own busy work. Interactive cat toys are a good way to give a cat a brain workout and keep him out of mischief. Pet Friendly5More info + Friendliness toward other household animals and friendliness toward humans are two completely different things. Some cats are more likely than others to be accepting of other pets in the home. Vital Stats: Life Span: 12 to 16 years

••••••••• Activity ••••••••• Playfulness •••••••• Need for Attention •••••••••• Affection •••• Need to Vocalize •••••• Docility ••••••••• Intelligence •••• Independence •••••• Healthiness and Hardiness •• Grooming needs •••••• Good with children •••••• Good with other pets Devon Rex Cat Personality Devons have been compared to pixies, elves, and, of course, space aliens for their jumbo-sized satellite-dish ears, large, mischievous 'window-to-the-soul' eyes, and ethereal appearance. Fanciers laud the 'poodle cat' (as the breed is affectionately called), as people-oriented snugglers that love nothing better than to cuddle up with you at night and wake you in the morning with hugs, kisses and purrs of affection. And since the Devon sheds less than other breeds, you can snuggle back without fear of covering yourself in cat hair. But there's lots of other reasons to acquire a Devon besides their coats: their loyalty, devotion, playfulness, courage, and intelligence, just to name a few of the qualities that make them a good choice for the cat-obsessed. Devons are shoulder perchers, lap sitters, tail waggers, and retrievers of tossed cat toys. They have a well-developed sense of curiosity and want to be involved in whatever you're doing, whether it's peeling potatoes for dinner or showering for a Saturday night date. Devon Rex Cat Breed Traits While the Cornish's coat lacks guard hairs, the Devon's coat contains all three hair types (guard, awn, and down), but the guard hairs are typically fragile and stunted, and the whisker hairs are often missing altogether. The hairs break easily and therefore this breed can develop bald patches that remain until the next hair growth cycle (typically fall and spring). Devons need very little grooming; their favorite grooming tool is your hand, applied on their heads and down their backs. Interested in the history of the Devon Rex cat breed? The Devon didn't settle into the unsuspecting laps of us humans until 1960. The father of the Devon breed, a feral, curly-coated tom, lived around an abandoned tin mine near Devonshire, England. He mated with a straight-coated calico female that produced a litter of kittens in the garden of cat fancier Beryl Cox. One of the kittens, a brownish-black male that Cox named Kirlee, had the same short, curly coat as his father. Breeders think that the calico female and the curly-coated male must have been related, since the Devon Rex gene that governs the curly coat is recessive and must be present in both parents to manifest in the offspring. At first, Kirlee was thought to be related to the Cornish Rex. Subsequent matings between Kirlee and the cats of Cornish breeder Brian Stirling-Webb resulted in only straight-coated offspring, from which Cox and Webb concluded that the two breeds were unrelated. The name Devon Rex was adopted for the new breed, and a breeding program established. The first Devon was imported to the United States in 1968. In 1972 ACFA became the first United States association to accept the Devon for Championship. The Devon was accepted by TICA in 1979 (the year TICA formed). The CFA recognized the Devon for Championship in 1983. Through careful outcrossing, breeders have expanded the Devon Rex gene pool while retaining the integrity of the breed. While he has never quite caught up to the Cornish Rex in popularity, the Devon has made great strides and is seen more and more frequently in the show halls and judging rings.
